  5. Makeup 101: How Do I Choose a Concealer?

How do i choose a concealer is one of the first questions one asks when one wants to fix blemishes and other skin issues. If you are one of them, this article is your go-to read and will give you everything you wish to ask.

Concealers are amazing. They can do wonders and make us look how we want ourselves to look. But let’s be honest, they often find themselves in a position where they have used the wrong concealers. This happens especially to beginners who create a bigger disaster while trying to fix a minor skin issue on their face. So, let’s make sure that it never happens, and for that, we must pour some theories in front of you about concealers and their types:

1. Stick Concealers:

Also called spot concealers are designed to hide skin issues on a small scale, like minor blemishes, acne, natural marks, and more.

2. Liquid Concealers:

As the name suggests, they have a liquid but milky consistency and can be used on almost all skin types. They are made in dewy and matte finishes and can be a great option to cover dark circles with minimal or full face coverage. Just make sure to keep a thin layer to avoid a cakey look.

3. Color Correcting Concealers:

Nowadays, one of the most common concealers is made in different colours to fix other skin problems. Commonly available in lavender, greed, red, and more.

4. Under Eye Concealers: Concealers of all types can be used to cover dark circles but if you are looking for something with promising results and exclusive for dark circles, go with these. Their formulae are made to penetrate the skin under the eyes and give good results.

5. Cream Concealers: are made to give full face coverage and result in a satin finish. They are usually used for complete coverage

So, now we know the basic types of concealers and their primary uses, we dive into the question how do I choose a concealer depending on your skin. And also, we recommend Clear Cover 3-color Concealer Palette, it’s the best out there.

1. Undertone and skin tone: Skin tone is the amount of melanin you have, which makes your skin pigmentation. Undertone is the colour of your soul. Kidding is the layer’s color under the skin’s surface and determines the color you select for your concealer. It needs to match your undertone color; otherwise, your makeup will become makeup for a clown to attend a carnival.

Naturally occurring undertones are warm, relaxed, and neutral. Warm skins have gold or yellowish hues, cool skins have pink, red, or blue hues, and neutrals have no intense noticeable shades; if any, they will exist between the spectrum.

How do I choose a concealer? Make sure to know your undertone and skin tone, and buy the concealer designed for your type. Pro Tip: to find your undertone, go out in bright sunlight, and check your veins under the wrist; if green, you have a warm undertone; if pink or rose-colored, you are a cool undertone. The color of veins matching the skin tone is for the ones with neutral undertones.

2. Foundation Shade

This is the basic rule: Select the shade of concealer based on the shade color of the foundation you are using with it. Pro Tip: Buy a set of three concealers, one in a light shade compared to your natural skin tone, one darker, and one neutral. This will give you flexibility for concealing when your skin tone changes after sun exposure.

3. Go for Lighter Shades: For under-eye concealing, which remains the most common use of concealers, choose a concealer that is at least one or preferably two shades lighter than your skin tone. This will ensure that while concealing your under-eye problems, you are also brightening this thin layer of skin, which is very important.

4. Blend light and dark shades for acne and blemishes

Concealers can hide both with the first application of a darker concealer compared to your skin tone and a lighter shade of concealer afterward. Use color-correcting concealers for even better results (green for acne).

5. For Contouring, 2 + 3 shade Rule

To add more prominent dimensions to your face, get a three-shade darker concealer and a two-shade lighter concealer. The lighter one is used at the highlights, including cheekbones, forehead middle, nose bridge, under your eyes, and chin. The rest of the face goes with darker concealer, or add where you want to define the face shape.
